Bakuli Pods

Bakuli pods are small 0.5 inch to 1 inch flower-shaped seed pods from the Lagerstroemia parviflora tree that have become popular in the bioactive enclosure and aquatic botanical hobbies. Their small size and smooth interior makes them an outstanding natural hide for isopods, springtails, and young shrimp — while their tulip or flower shape adds a naturalistic focal point to any aquascape or terrarium. A great fit for blackwater and biotope setups built on the botanical method. Source location — India.

Why Hobbyists Love Bakuli Pods

• Excellent young shrimp hides — the open flower shape provides a sheltered, enclosed space that young shrimp instinctively seek out, especially during molting
• Natural hides — isopods and springtails will use bakuli pods as breeding sites and hides
• Biofilm development & microfauna hotspots — the interior surface develops a rich biofilm that shrimp and plecos graze on, creating active microfauna hotspots
• Tannin release — contributes gentle tannins and humic acids to soften water and create blackwater conditions
• Long-lasting — a dense, durable pod that holds its shape for months in an aquarium

How to Use in Aquariums

Rinse, boil for 15–20 minutes, and soak overnight before adding to your tank. Place on the substrate with the opening facing sideways or slightly downward to create an inviting hide. See our preparation guide for full instructions.

How to Use in Terrariums

No preparation needed. Place directly in the enclosure as a hide or foraging surface for isopods, springtails, and other microfauna.  Bakuli pods are a microfauna hotspot.  Springtails and isopods readily colonize these smaller nut pods.  Excellent long-lasting ground scatter.

Natural product — size, color, and shape vary between pods. Not for human consumption.
